5 ways to maintain a positive attitude.

Flat TireWe are in an unprecedented time right now. Because of this it’s really important to take a proactive approach to maintaining a positive attitude. Attitude is everything at work and in your personal life. At work, I can 100% guarantee that without a positive attitude you will go nowhere in your career. How you react to situations will mean everything to your career!

My favorite quote is from a man named Charles Swindoll and he said, “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company…a church….a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude…I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you…we are in charge of our attitudes.”

Take a look and try these 5 things to maintain a positive attitude at work and in your personal life!

Give to others

  • There have been many studies showing that giving to others is the key to happiness and can actually help you live longer. In addition to this, when you make a conscious effort to give to others it will help you build meaningful connections which are essential to maintaining a positive attitude.

Avoid negative people

  • This one may sound easier than it is. It’s hard to break away from the negative people in your life. A work this may be a bit easier. Being around negative people can drain your energy and cause you to feel overwhelmed. The ability to recognize the negative people in your life, and finding ways to avoid them will result in a more sustainable and satisfying life for you. Find the positive people in your personal life and surround yourself with them as much as possible. At work find someone who in is the position you want to be in and shadow them at every opportunity.

Action alleviates stress

  • It’s a vicious circle. You stress about something that you need to do or fix in your life but you just do everything you can to avoid it. Then that stresses you out more. Try to push yourself to take action. You will find the fear you had will most likely not come to fruition. After you take action on the pending items at home and at work you will feel 100% better.

Read positivity, watch positivity, and listen to positivity.

  • With all of the resources we have to get our news and information, negativity is all around us. Instead of following the negativity on social media try to type words like positive, motivation, or success into the search on Facebook or Instagram and following pages that will insert a positive message into your life. Instead of watching that show or story about drama and negativity, watch Goalcast videos or a Ted Talk to insert positivity into your life.

Exercise daily

  • Fitness Magazine wrote an article explaining why it’s so important to your career to exercise daily. “Employees who exercise regularly, a minimum of 150 minutes per week, are less likely to call in sick, have better attendance, and focus while at work,” says Michael Mantell, PhD, author of Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff: P.S. It’s All Small Stuff. That may translate to a 15 percent overall boost in work productivity, according to research out of the UK’s Leeds Metropolitan University. And that may translate to a six-hour, 48-minute workday instead of an eight-hour workday. Voilà—now you have time for the gym!”

I can attest to this as I’m sure anyone can who works out regularly. I have more energy, I feel better about myself, and I’m much more focused at work. It reduces my anxiety and I focus much less on the negative things in life.

Conclusion

Take some time over the next two weeks and try some of these things to help you grow and maintain a positive attitude. Life is too short to walk around negative and unhappy. We have the tools and the choice every day to embrace the positive side of things. Will you?
